This is an exciting opportunity to work with a unique organisation at the heart of Government.

We are seeking an ambitious, detail-oriented individual who is passionate about data quality and governance, and who will support high standards in data management practices.

Join our friendly team who are committed to ensuring data is accurate, consistent, and well-governed to facilitate effective decision-making across Government.

The Analytics Engineer contributes significantly to supporting data governance frameworks, ensuring the integrity, stewardship, and compliance of data within the Commercial and Grants functions. This involves enhancing data processes, collaborating with data owners, and promoting good governance practices throughout the data lifecycle.

This role requires a professional with a solid understanding of data quality principles and governance frameworks, possessing the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders in a dynamic environment.

Job description

The GCG Data & Analytical Services team provides analytical support to both the Government Grants Management Function (GGMF) and the Government Commercial Function (GCF). We are involved in a broad range of projects, including publishing official statistics, developing governance frameworks, and improving data quality across the Commercial and Grants functions.

This role supports our Data Quality and Governance pillar, helping to embed robust data standards and ensure high levels of trust in the data used to drive decision-making across government.

The responsibilities of this role include:

Supporting the establishment and embedding of data governance standards:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of a data governance framework across GGMF and GCF.
  • Help define data ownership, stewardship roles, and data quality responsibilities.
  • Provide training and support for users of datasets.
  • Ensure alignment with the functions' digital and data strategy and data governance principles.

Driving improvements in data quality:

  • Collaborate across the function to identify and resolve data quality issues in critical datasets.
  • Develop and monitor data quality metrics, and support the setup of dashboards to assess data completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Maintain documentation of field specifications, data storage, data flows, data quality and data validation rules across a range of systems.
  • Advocate for the use of consistent data definitions, metadata, and data standards within the function and across wider government.

Engaging with stakeholders across government:

  • Provide advice on data governance and data quality improvements to stakeholders.
  • Assist in building a community of data quality and governance within the function, promoting data owner and stewardship behaviours across GGMF and GCF for critical data assets.
  • Contribute to cross-government data governance and data health forums and communities.

Occasionally, the post holder may be required to carry out other duties within the scope of the grade and their skill set, or higher-level responsibilities as necessary.
