About Security Services Group (SSG)

Security Services Group (SSG) is a business unit within the DIO which assists the MoD and the wider Government Estate in meeting its security requirements.

SSG has over 230 staff located throughout the UK, Germany, Cyprus and Gibraltar who are responsible for the design, installation and maintenance of security systems across the MOD and Government Estate.

Job description

SSG provides specialist security advice, compliance and assurance to areas of the public sector that require the highest levels of security protection. SSG is the Governments expert provider specialising in design, installation and maintenance of both custom in-house security systems and highly accredited commercial products on the government estate.

Working as part of a 230-person team, we provide full life support services to UK Defence and Government sites throughout the UK and overseas.

Reporting directly to AH Business Services and DH Business Services, you will be responsible for overseeing the smooth operation of an interesting variety of assignments including recruitment, strategic workforce planning, management information reporting and workforce support projects and ad hoc tasking. The position has a key role in ensuring the effective functioning of critical business processes and support functions.

Strong analytical skills are required with the ability to use data to identify areas for improvement and implement solutions, driving business change.

Key Responsibilities:

Recruitment Lead:

Drive the end-to-end recruitment process:

  • Working with line managers (LM) to ensure all job descriptions and job advert templates across the business are current and standardised.
  • In conjunction with LMs, to write and upload recruitment requests onto the Civil Services Jobs online platform.
  • Be the point of contact for the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) including uploading new vacancies onto the CTP website to reach those leaving the armed forces.
  • Assist LMs with the sift and interview process.
  • Liaise directly with Defence Business Services (DBS) recruiting & onboarding teams.
  • Partner with LMs to ensure effective onboarding and integration of new employees.
  • Collaborate with Higher Management Group (HMG) and LMs to identify workforce needs and develop strategies for attracting and retaining top talent.

 

Strategic workforce planning (SWfP)

This role will lead development of a workforce model for the SSGs workforce:

  • Review and maintain the accuracy of existing workforce model used by the HMG to assist in forecasting future resourcing requirements.
  • Assess existing and alternative workforce models exploring the opportunities to improve or introduce new models, as applicable.
  • Working with AH Business Services and DH Business Services, you will provide SWfP advice and influence at business and directorate level, supporting organisational change activity and providing insights to support decisions.
  • Develop strong links with Workforce Planning leads across the Security Directorate to ensure that this work is aligned with similar work already being undertaken.

Management information

Regular upkeep and communication of business information, including:

  • Mandatory training.
  • Nominal roll.
  • Organisational charts (using MS Visio).
  • Ad hoc reports as required, such as annual report completions, annual leave balances and absence-related information.
  • Input to monthly Customer Delivery Committee (CDC) return.
  • Input to monthly Security Directorate Senior Leaders Team (SLT) slide deck.

Workforce support

This position requires an understanding of MoD CivHR principles and practices, as well as the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation. Duties will include:

  • Be the business point of contact with SSGs HR Business Partner (HRBP) for day-to-day workforce issues and enquiries.
  • Partner with line managers to address employee issues and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Lead for SSGs Market Skills Allowance (MSA) annual review with HRBP.
  • Lead for responsibility allowances tracker and Finance reviews.
  • Member and secretary for SSGs HR Working Group.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.  This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
