Job summary

This is a Fixed-term Appointment as a Head Office Principal Security Advisor in the Head Office Safety Security Business Resilience, Technology and Accommodation Team. Your responsibilities will be as described in this job advert. The reason why you are appointed for a fixed period is due to temporary vacancy that has arisen. This post will therefore begin on your appointment for 12 months with the possibility to extend.

If you are a permanent MoD civil servant and are found successful for an internally advertised Fixed-term Appointment (FTA) you should move into the post under a Temporary Transfer (for up to a maximum of 23 months). At the end of the posting you will return to your previous MoD Business area. If this posting is at a higher grade, your promotion will be temporary, and you will return to your substantive grade at the end of the Temporary Transfer. If a Temporary Transfer cannot be agreed between all parties then a transfer on an FTA contract is possible, read the FTA and Change of Work Location in the UK policy for further information.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised individual to fill the position of Principal Security Advisor for Head Office TLB. This is an exciting, high-profile role which works across the whole of Defence. The office is a busy, fun, and supportive environment; and the role holder will hold line management responsibility of key security, resilience and safety functions within Head Office.  This post is open to staff on level transfer or staff on temporary promotion.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

As the post-holder you will be responsible for setting the policy, governance and assurance arrangements for Head Office and Main Building. You will advise the Senior Security Risk Coordinator on security and resilience policies and collaborate closely with your Deputy PSYA, Establishment Security Officer and other key members of the Safety, Security and Resilience team to ensure the successful implementation of security and resilience policies within Head Office. This will include the development of strategies and improvement plans in Security and Resilience.

You will ensure your team is managing security risk across the threat spectrum of terrorism, espionage, sabotage, subversion organised crime. You will be required to brief Ministers and senior officials on security and resilience matters of Main Building working closely with the Private Offices and the Main Building community a build a strong security culture.

You will be a key member of the Main Building Incident Management Command Group helping to manage incidents and running the secretariat helping to lead business recovery activities. This may include managing crises that disrupt or have the potential to disrupt business in MB. You will have a wider awareness of the changing priorities and responsibilities and be able to work flexibly distinguishing the preferable from the critical.

Due to the nature of the role, you will be required to be in the office between up to 80% of the working week. The role requires an element of out of hours/on call working, responding to incidents and issues impacting MB, for which an allowance is payable. This is managed through a rota and shared with the other members of the team.

The successful candidate will meet the following essential criteria:

  • People with excellent people skills, able to express themselves clearly and engage with a diverse set of senior stakeholders to ensure that Head Offices priorities are met.
  • People with sound judgement and analytical skills, able to take evidence-based decisions and calculated risks, with a good instinct for when to seek direction.
  • People who understand customer service and have a desire to improve operational delivery of essential services.
  • People who are resilient, able to oversee and progress a broad programme of activities, prioritising among them and delivering to deadlines.
  • Individuals who are highly organised and able to establish a close working relationship with a wide range of contacts, inside and outside of the Department.
  • A sense of fun and a willingness to help develop a close and supportive team ethos.

Experience:

  • A proven record of delivering within the security field policy or operational delivery.
  • Evidence of responding to resilience issues in an operational environment and the ability to demonstrate risk management processes.
  • Desirable member of the security institute and or business continuity management.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.  This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
