Job summary

His Majestys Naval Base Clyde (HMNB Clyde) is home to the United Kingdoms Strategic Nuclear Deterrent, Astute Class Attack Submarines, First Mine Counter Measure Squadron and 43 Cdo Royal Marines. It is an operational support and maintenance base, within the Navy Command TLB and comprises both Faslane and Coulport sites. HMNB Clydes primary purpose is to provide engineering and logistical support to the Royal Navy in maintaining Continuous at Sea Deterrent (CASD). This is achieved by ensuring at least one Vanguard Class submarine is on patrol at sea every day of the year.

RNAD Coulport is responsible for the storage, processing, maintenance and issue of the Trident Weapon System and the ammunitioning of all submarine-embarked tactical weapons.

The Clyde Design Authority undertakes a vital role in ensuring that key defence nuclear infrastructure that supports nuclear powered warships and nuclear weapon systems is safe and fit for purpose.

We are looking to recruit a Mechanical Engineer to support the technical capability of HMNB Clyde Approving Authority (Design). Applications are encouraged from Mechanical Engineers who have recently qualified with a relevant recognised qualification or are looking to develop their skills in the nuclear sector. Previous Experience within the Defence or Nuclear sectors is desirable but not deemed essential.

The role involves working as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer within a multi-disciplinary engineering team in the Approving Authority (Design), consisting of Mechanical, Civil, Building Services and Electrical Engineers. In this role, you will be responsible for the authorship, development, assessment, and maintenance of Mechanical Design Substantiation for the nuclear infrastructure at HMNB Clyde. You will have the opportunity to develop valuable skills and experience working in a high hazard/high consequence low frequency environment whilst playing a key role in supporting defence outputs.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Working within the Clyde Design Authority, the Senior Design Engineers duties include:

  • Authorship, development, assessment, maintenance and management of the suite of Clyde Mechanical Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents.
  • Authorship, development, assessment, maintenance and management of mechanical design changes/concessions.
  • Presentation of Clyde Mechanical Design substantiations, to Clyde Due Process nuclear safety committees.
  • Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedules, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case requirements through-life.
  • Production and review of Periodic Review of Safety reports.
  • Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Production of Independent Technical Review (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR).
  • Using a combination of general and specialist mechanical engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
  • Applying appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment.
  • Producing robust technical justification to allow for Mechanical Engineering design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry.

Person specification

To be considered for this role, the person will ideally have:

  • Broad knowledge in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with experience (although not crucial) of some of the following Mechanical systems; cranes, pump systems, heating ventilation & air conditioning (HVAC), and pressure systems. Applications are also encouraged from Mechanical Engineers who have recently qualified with a relevant recognised qualification and looking to develop their skills further.
  • Ability to provide practical, creative and cost-effective solutions for design changes / modifications to mechanical infrastructure.
  • A good understanding of British and international design standards.
  • A track record of making intelligent evidence-based decisions using various sources of data.
  • Good skills in verbal and written communication.
  • The ability to effectively manage and prioritise your own workload.

Qualifications

Minimum HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
Desirable (not essential): Accredited BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent qualifications and experience in a relevant engineering discipline.

This post may be eligible for the NSQEP Recruitment Retention Allowance of up to £12000 per annum.
