Job summary

The Trade and Investment Negotiations (Goods) Directorate is part of the Trade Policy, Implementation and Negotiations Group, in the Department for Business and Trade. Our directorate plays a pivotal role in coordinating trade interests and leading the UK's trade and domestic regulation policy for manufactured goods. We deliver and implement trade policy and agreements which reflect the needs of UK businesses, so that exporters can be successful and competitive internationally, whether with Europe or the rest of the world.

This is a high profile and fast-paced role within a supportive team, with regular exposure to seniors and it also has line management responsibilities. The post holder will need to demonstrate excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and an ability to solve problems. The post holder will also be expected to work collaboratively with others, both inside and outside the directorate. 

The Strategic Delivery Team sits at the centre of the directorate, running and coordinating the key corporate functions which enable the directorate to thrive. We lead on a range of activities, including business planning, budget and workforce planning, in-year rewards, exit interview analysis, governance, resourcing, and business continuity. As a team we are highly supportive and you will be expected to work collaboratively as a team player, while helping to set strategic direction.  

Job description

  • You will have line management of one HEO, and you will be expected to support their development and empower them, setting direction as needed.
  • With the support of the HEO, you will lead the planning and delivery of the directorates in-year reward scheme which takes place three times a year. 
  • You will understand DBTs corporate priorities and make sure those are reflected in the directorate, working with the senior management team (SMT) to make sure workstreams have the right oversight and resourcing.
  • You will be responsible for the directorates Executive Assistant network, providing guidance and leadership to three colleagues to make sure high-quality support is provided to the directorates Senior Civil Servants and across teams. 
  • You will contribute to the Places for Growth (PfG) programme, by using data to understand staff experiences of multi-location working, providing recommendations for improvement, and collaborating with HR colleagues.
  • You will use strong attention to detail to analyse data relating to employee experience, including exit interviews, people survey results, temperature check feedback and in-year reward diversity and inclusion (D&I) analysis
  • You will be part of a collaborative team, supporting the Chief of Staff with the directorates other priorities such as work force planning and organising away days. 

Person specification

  • An excellent communicator, both written and spoken, you will confidently advise colleagues at different levels of seniority.
  • Proactive and proficient planner, using sensitive, inclusive and tactful judgement to make effective decisions, considering people, finance and resourcing needs. 
  • Able to confidently lead on tasks with autonomy and minimal direction, taking ideas forward to the SMT and wider directorate. 
  • Strong attention to detail, able to analyse data, such as exit interview feedback, and draw out key themes and recommendations for SMT. 
  • Confident in building and maintaining strong positive relationships with high-profile internal and external stakeholders.
  • Observant and open to suggesting new ways of working where improvements are needed to the teams service, processes or directorates culture.
  • Manage a team successfully, with an inclusive leadership style including emotional intelligence, encouragement and support to encourage high performance and maintain motivation.
  • Experience in a similar role and/or experience with working with senor colleagues is ideal, although not essential.
