Job summary

Working within a small, specialised team, the IT Security Manager is the site lead and focal point for all IT Security concerns at the Defence Academy, ensuring that IT systems operate securely under the principles of Secure by Design, and in compliance with policies and processes.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Strategic Command is going through a significant transformation programme which aims to improve the way the Command conducts its business and delivers for Defence and the nation. As a consequence of this, all posts within Strategic Command Headquarters and in time the wider organisation, are/will be subject to review and potential changes as we continuously improve across the period of the transformation programme. These changes may be minor or could be more substantive and will generate new opportunities.  Throughout, the Commands transformation programme is committed to following the MODs framework on managing and supporting people through the change process and places an emphasis on early and open consultation and engagement with the Commands personnel and Trade Unions.

Job description

  • Act as Defence Academy Security Assurance Co-ordinator (SAC) and focal point for all Defence Academy IT security concerns, ensuring that IT systems undergo continual improvement against the Secure by Design framework - this will include drafting, updating, and maintaining all security documentation and artifacts including Risk Management and process documentation, Security Operating Procedures (SyOPs), and ensuring that IT systems are operated in compliance with policies and processes. It will require the post holder to complete and update Defence Assurance Risk Tool (DART) entries for all systems requiring accreditation.
  • Conduct IT security risk assessments, recording and managing risks using risk management tools, escalating to risk owners for decisions as required.
  • Lead the Defence Academy IT Security Working Group (SWG)
  • As the site lead and SME for IT Security, respond to all incidents, requests and queries relating to ICS security that arise.
  • During periods of exceptionally high alert status or site-closedown periods (e.g. public holidays), the IT Security Manager may be required to be contactable out of hours.
  • Maintain continual professional development and stay up to date with the industry.
  • Deliver education and awareness programmes to personnel.

Person specification

This role would suit someone with prior experience working in IT/Cyber Security, particularly within Defence.  Familiarity with the NIST Cyber Security Framework is desirable, along with a good overall level of IT skills.  Experience in delivering briefings and education to personnel at all levels would be advantageous.

This recruitment process will consist of two parts:

1. A written application containing your experience (a CV and a Statement of Suitability (Personal Statement)) and 3 Behaviours drawn from the Civil Service Success Profiles.
